Yet another STEM website - how the SFF fills a void
There are lots of websites having something to do with youth science and science fairs. Also, there are charities, not-for-profit, and for profit organizations that support youth science. And there are the websites of the fairs themselves, over 100 regional fairs in Canada, and the Canada Wide Science Fair too. So some might wonder - do we really need another website about youth STEM?
This website speaks to the value of the science fair experience for participating youth so there can be better understanding from those that can support it, parents, teachers, educational institutions, and industry. A significant goal of this SFF website is to unify best practices in science fair fundraising, as it seems that many fairs struggle to attract and retain sufficient sponsors. Those tackling fundraising are volunteers without guidance, so this website serves to bring together the collective wisdom to strengthen individual efforts. Specific to Canada, the 103 regional fairs are effectively the "franchises / clients" of the CWSF. The first major deliverable of the Science Fair Funding initiative is a document to be published that will be an aggregation of best fundraising practices from the contributed content of many regional fair fundraisers. This website strives to help those regional fairs in better funding support where there is fiscal need, and opportunity to enhance those fairs too through enhanced support.
Another use of this website will be an engagement of sponsors in feedback to strengthen the sponsorship values for them.
Also, there are plans for other content (yet to be specified), to be added to this website in the future to broaden support and interest in ways the other youth STEM websites have not addressed.
The author of this website is a volunteer fundraiser for the Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF) as of 2015. It is his hope that this website is a catalyst for more individuals and companies to engage with support of a regional science fair in their area, whether it be to volunteer time, offer in-kind contributions, or provide financial support.
Please browse this website and see where you might be inspired to get involved and take action that suits your interests and abilities.
