About the scope of science fairs in Canada

Can you spot the famous astronaut attending the CWSF in the photo above?
Each year in Canada approximately:
  • 400,000 grade 7-12 do a science fair project
  • 25,000 participate in 103 regional fairs
  • 500 win a trip to compete at CWSF

The CWSF started in 1962, is a registered charity and as of Feb 2018 has 2 staff and 3 contractors, and over 700 volunteers - including approx. 200 chaperones and approx. 350 judges.  It is a week-long event.

Example regional fair - the ORSF (Ottawa-Carleton) is one of the 103 regional fairs. It is a registered charity with NO paid staff or contractors and about 140 volunteers - approx. 120 of them judges. The ORSF is permitted to send up to 11 youth to the CWSF each year.
Consider the many science fair values as summarized on the home page, and how they can help strengthen youth, both your own children and other youth in your region.   It may encourage you to introduce your children to science fairs through attending a regional science fair with them, or to become a volunteer, donor, or sponsor with a science fair.

Many schools don't have a science fair event, so youth from those schools are permitted to directly enter the regional science fair in their area.   All the approximate 500 CWSF participants must win a spot at a regional fair to attend the week-long, all expenses paid CWSF event and competition.

Science fair sponsor example

Ross Video, a 600 person global company is both a sponsor of the ORSF and the CWSF. See what David Ross, CEO of  Ross Video, who was 2016 Ottawa's CEO of the year says about science fairs in this PRESS RELEASE.   David Ross also gave our keynote address at our 2016 ORSF awards ceremony.
